The Team : Matthew Shuker - Head of commercial

Matthew

What is your role at Oaks?
Working alongside Jo, I am responsible for bringing together commercial brands and organisations to achieve mutual return on investment. I help our clients to maximise their commercial potential through establishing partnerships with key brands as well as supporting both the client and brand to activate their investment. I am also responsible for the development of this area of the business through building a network of relationships with a portfolio of brands.

How would you summarise your career and experience to date?
Having been involved in sport since the age of 18 as a professional athlete and coach before moving on to local authority and national governing body sports development, I would say I have sound 5 years experience in public sector sport. More recently I have moved into the private sector spending 4 years with one of the world’s largest sports brands, firstly in a UK role before moving to the international office with responsibility over product management, sponsorship and marketing programmes.

What do you think is unique about Oaks?
I would say the phrase “what you see, is what you get” is very fitting to Oaks. There is no smoke and mirrors – just a number of very experienced, knowledgeable people going one step further for their clients.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the world of sport in the next 5 years?
The continuing economic uncertainty and the level of debt that is apparent within major sport.

What is your favourite sporting moment?
My other half works for Fulham Football Club so we managed to get tickets to see the last 16 of the Europa League. What a night as Fulham overturned a 3-1 defeat by Juventus in the first leg by beating them at Craven Cottage 4-1! Whilst I’m a mighty red supporter, that night was really special.

What is your personal greatest sporting achievement?
Winning my first international badminton tournament – I was the 2008 Icelandic Open Men’s Singles Champion....doesn’t mean a lot to many but I remember it clearly.

If you get any free time, how do you like to use it?
Free time seems to be a luxury that I never seem to enjoy however in between working, going to the gym and catching up with friends, I do like a good DVD or bit of Formula 1 action.
