Last January, Oaks, along with partners Laureus, Streetfootballworld, The International Platform on Sport and Development and Beyond Sport, launched the inaugural Fundraising in Sport for Development, State of the Sector Report. The objective of the report was to benchmark fundraising performance, review the impact of Covid-19 on income, and inform the future of fundraising across the sport for development sector.
One year later, we have joined with our partners once again to bring you the second State of the Sector Report, evaluating how sport for development organisations’ fundraising performance, approaches and strategies have changed with another year of Covid-related challenges. We were overwhelmed by the response to our second State of the Sector Survey, which saw 112 organisations delivering social good through sport in every corner of the world take the time to share their views.
Key Findings in 2022 include:
Despite the continuation of Covid-related disruption to fundraising activities, more than 50% of organisations in sport for development are forecasting income growth over the next 12 months. This is an incredible turnaround from just 26% one year ago.
22% of respondents stated that they exceeded their fundraising target over the last full financial year, compared to just 10% last year. However, 41% of organisations still failed to meet their target, indicating that Covid-19 continues to be a significant challenge for the sector.
Fundraising approaches and challenges varied significantly by geography. Respondents in Europe and North America reported the highest likelihood of exceeding their fundraising targets, while just 4% of organisations based in Africa exceeded their targets.
